Dr. Brenda J. King Ph.D.
Clinical Psychologist | Shamanic Practitioner | Founder, The Unmeasured WomanCredentials and Professional Record
Brenda J. King, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist with 25 years of practice. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (2021) and a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology from North Dakota State University (1997).
Before her doctoral work, Brenda spent 12 years as an intensive care unit registered nurse, which shaped a clinical lens that is simultaneously biological, psychological, and deeply human. That foundation informs everything she does.
Her clinical practice has spanned general psychology with specializations in behavioral health, trauma, and personality disorders. In 2002 she became a partner at Lipp, Carlson, Witucki & Associates. In 2017, she and her husband became sole owners of the practice following the retirement of the founding partners. The practice continues today at lclwpsychologists.com.
Clinical Hypnosis Brenda trained in clinical hypnosis through her graduate program and went on to teach clinical hypnosis to international groups of health professionals through the Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. She served as President of APA Division 30, the Society of Psychological Hypnosis, from 2007 to 2008. She continues to draw on hypnosis as a clinical tool where it serves the work.

The Ideas She Works With
These are the concepts and frameworks at the center of Brenda’s work with high-achieving women. They did not come from a business model. They came from 25 years of sitting across from women who had done everything right and still felt like strangers in their own lives.
Identity After Success The question nobody prepares high-achieving women for: who am I now that I’ve built what I set out to build? Success can quietly hollow out the identity that was organized around achieving it.
The Competence Cage The set of skills, roles, and behaviors that made you exceptional has also become the structure you can’t get out of. The cage is built from your greatest strengths, which is exactly what makes it so hard to see.
Identity Fracture The moment when the self that performed, produced, and was recognized stops being coherent. Not a breakdown. A threshold. The place where the old identity can no longer hold what you’ve become.
Coherence Over Story Most therapeutic and coaching work tries to give you a better story about yourself. Coherence Over Story is different: the goal is not a narrative that makes sense of the past, but a felt sense of internal alignment that doesn’t depend on one.
Ecstatic Grief Grief that is not only loss but liberation. The grief that moves through the body when you finally stop holding something that was never truly yours. It is physical, sacred, and often the first sign that something real is happening.
Liminality and the Unknown The threshold space between who you were and who you are becoming. Brenda treats this not as a problem to solve but as a terrain to inhabit, with practices suited to the crossing.
Internal vs. External Authority High-achieving women are trained to locate authority outside themselves: in credentials, validation, consensus, outcomes. The work is relocating that authority inward, so that decision-making no longer requires external permission.
Self-Trust Not confidence. Not optimism. The specific capacity to hear your own knowing and act from it, especially when the evidence hasn’t arrived yet.
Living Experimentally A way of moving through change that prioritizes curiosity over certainty, and small acts of genuine aliveness over the performance of having it together.
Shamanism for Modern Life Brenda is a trained shamanic practitioner. She does not use shamanic practice as metaphor or inspiration. She uses it as a working methodology, integrated with her clinical background, for women who have reached the limits of what purely cognitive or analytical approaches can touch.
The Unmeasured Woman The organizing vision of Brenda’s work. The woman whose interior life exceeds every external measure placed on her. Who cannot be fully quantified by her achievements, her roles, her grief, or her age. Who carries more knowing and wanting than the containers around her were ever built to hold. The Unmeasured Woman is not a concept. It is a recognition.
The women I work with have perfected the alchemy of making difficult things look easy.
The Longer Story
Brenda King did not plan to become the person she is now.
She spent 15 years as an ICU nurse before she went back to school for psychology. That decision made her unusual from the start: a clinician who had already held people at the edge of life before she was trained to hold them at the edge of their minds. She understood the body before she understood theory. She understood urgency before she understood process.
Her doctoral work at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, completed in 2021, came decades into a career most people would have considered complete. She kept going because she was curious, and because she is constitutionally unable to stop at the edge of what she already knows.
Her 25 years of clinical practice gave her something most coaching approaches are missing: she has sat with people in genuine crisis. Personality disorders. Trauma. The slow erosion of a self. She knows the difference between someone who is struggling and someone who is succeeding by every measurable standard and still privately coming apart at the seams. Those two experiences can look identical from the outside. She learned to see the difference.
The hypnosis work took her international. Teaching clinical hypnosis to health professionals across the world, serving as President of APA Division 30, she was operating at the far edge of what mainstream psychology was willing to hold. That has always been her natural territory.
The shamanic practice came in the way the most important things usually do: not as a professional decision, but as something that found her and refused to be ignored. She did not add it to her clinical work as an offering. She integrated it as a way of seeing, which is different. It changed what she could perceive in a session, what she could hold, what she could offer to women who had already tried everything psychology had to give and were still standing at the threshold.
She lives on six acres. The land is not a backdrop to her work. It is a collaborator, something she has been in relationship with for years, still finding new rooms in. Her practice of sitting with the land, of noticing what it offers, of making space for nature as a genuine intelligence rather than a pleasant amenity, runs through everything she teaches.
She is not a business coach. She is not a life coach. She is a clinical psychologist, a shamanic practitioner, and someone who has spent 25 years developing a rare ability to see what is actually happening underneath the surface of a high-achieving woman’s life, and to help her find her way through it without losing herself in the process.
Her work is for women who have done the therapy. Who have done the coaching. Who have read the books and taken the courses and still find themselves at a threshold they cannot seem to cross. Not because they have not worked hard enough, but because the work they have been doing was built for a different kind of crossing.
She is building The Unmeasured Woman as the home for that work. A place for women whose interior life has outgrown every container that was built to hold it.
What I’ve Learned in 25 years of This Work
Your restlessness isn’t a problem to fix – it’s your soul trying to get your attention.
When you don’t know how you know… but you know you know… and you know you knew. That’s not confusion. That’s your inner knowing coming online.
Identity fracture – that feeling of not recognising yourself in your own life – isn’t a midlife crisis. It’s a sacred invitation to remember who you were before the world told you who to be.
We’re not meant to live from our achievements. We’re meant to live from our essence.
The women I work with aren’t broken. They’re awakening. They’re remembering that success without soul connection feels like wearing clothes that don’t fit.
The Blend of Worlds I Bring
I weave together everything that’s shaped me:
- 25 years as a clinical psychologist and 12 years as an ICU nurse
- Studies in shamanism, Toltec wisdom, hypnosis, and yoga Nidra meditation
- Shamanic journeys that have been part of my life long before I knew they were a ‘thing’
- The knowing that science and soul aren’t separate – they’re different languages for the same truth
I’m not your typical therapist or your typical spiritual teacher. I’m the woman who can hold both your psychology degree and your shamanic visions, your corporate success and your soul’s rebellion, your practical mind and your mystical knowing.
If You’re Here, You’re Ready
If you’ve found your way to me, it’s because you’re standing at a threshold. The life you’ve built is too small for who you’re becoming, and pretending it fits is exhausting.
You’re ready to stop performing and start becoming.
You’re ready to remember who you are when you stop being who everyone else needs you to be.
You hold the key. The answers you seek are already within you – you just need someone who can see you clearly enough to reflect them back.
That’s what I do. I see you. All of you. The successful woman and the wild one hiding underneath. The achiever and the seeker. The person you’ve become and the one you’ve always been.
And I help you remember that both can exist in the same beautiful, complex, authentic you.
